Albuquerque Metro Area Descriptions

AREA 10: SANDIA HEIGHTS (East of Tramway and North of San Antonio) - Situated at the foot of the Sandia Mountains, this area features elegant contemporary and adobe-styled homes on one-half to one-acre lots. Natural landscaping is dominant in this area as well as great city views. Many "Santa Fe" styles homes amid southwest contemporaries. The Elena Gallegos nature area and the Sandia Tram is located in this area.

AREA 20: NORTH ALBUQUERQUE ACRES (Ventura to Tramway and North of San Antonio) - Similar to Sandia Heights, but the architectural styles are more varied. Some of the streets and roads are not paved as yet. There are good mountain and city views. Horses are allowed in some sections.

AREA 21: ALBUQUERQUE ACRES WEST (I-25 to Ventura and North of Paseo del Norte) - This is the western section of North Albuquerque Acres. Some of the streets and roads are not paved as yet. There are good mountain and city views. Horses are allowed in some sections.

AREA 30: FAR NORTHEAST HEIGHTS (Wyoming to Tramway and Montgomery to San Antonio) - An attractive newer area which includes the Albuquerque Academy, an excellent private School covering grades 6-12, the Tanoan Country Club, and the gated Tanoan Community.

AREA 31: FOOTHILLS NORTH (East of Tramway and Montgomery to San Antonio) - A newer housing area that includes Glenwood Hills. The area offers good mountain views and easy access to open space at the foot of the mountains.

AREA 32: ACADEMY WEST (I-25 TO Wyoming and Montgomery to Paseo del Norte) - A lovely area which includes the Arroyo del Oso Golf Course.

AREA 40: UNM AREA NORTH (I-25 to San Mateo and Central to I-40) - This area includes the University of New Mexico and many charming homes with mature landscaping, hardwood floors, and plaster walls. Most homes were built from 1930-1952. There is easy access to both freeways, hospitals and downtown.

AREA 41: UPTOWN (I-25 to Wyoming and I-40 to Montgomery) - A mature area that includes Corondo Shopping Mall, Winrock Shopping Center, and the brand new Albuquerque Uptown open air Mall.

AREA 42: UNM AREA SOUTH (I-25 to San Mateo and Central to Gibson/Kirtland Base) - This section is bordered on the south by Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia National Laboratories and the Albuquerque International Sunport. This area contains many charming older homes in established neighborhoods. The Ridgecrest and the Nob Hill area add grace to the area. There is easy access to hospitals and downtown.

AREA 50: NORTHEAST HEIGHTS (Wyoming to Tramway and Central to Montgomery) - A large residential area with many conveniently located homes that were primarily built from the 1950 through the late 1970's.

AREA 51: FOOTHILLS SOUTH (East of Tramway and I-40 to Montgomery) - A lovely area which offers good mountain views and easy access to the Sandia Mountains. The homes are generally newer in age.

AREA 60: FOUR HILLS VILLAGE (East of Tramway/Kirtland Base and South of Central) - A secluded area south of Central and adjacent to air force base land with gracious homes on larger lots that were generally built in the 1960's and 1970's.

AREA 70: FAIRGROUNDS AREA (San Mateo to Wyoming and Central to I-40) - A residential area just east of the UNM area north with many conveniently located homes that were primarily built from the 1950 through the late 1970's. The Fairgrounds is located in this area.

AREA 71: SOUTHEAST HEIGHTS (San Mateo to Tramway and KAFB to Central) - This section is bordered on the south by Kirtland Air Force Base, Sandia National Laboratories. Many of the homes were built in the 1950's and have hardwood floors and plaster walls.

AREA 80: DOWNTOWN AREA (The Rio Grande River to I-25 and Avenida Cesar Chavez to I-40) - The original heart of Albuquerque with many older homes and neighborhoods. Homes were built primarily from the 1880's through the 1940's. There is exciting revitalization occurring in this area. Many new loft and condo projects are also being built. This area includes Old Town, Downtown, the Zoo, 3+ Museums, and many fine restaurants.

AREA 90: NEAR SOUTH VALLEY (Coors to I25 and Isleta Indian Reservation to Rio Bravo) - This area is a mixture of historic neighborhood and rural acreage. Green pastures, horses, animals and fruit trees are plentiful in this area. Many new subdivisions are also found in this area.

AREA 91: VALLEY FARMS (Coors to I25 and Rio Bravo to Central) - Located near the Rio Grande River, tall trees and green pastures describe Valley Farms. Gardens, horses, animals, fruit trees...a distinctive rural feeling.

AREA 92: SOUTHWEST HEIGHTS (Coors West to Laguna Reservation, Central to Rio Bravo) - This area is a mixture of older homes and many new developments. There are good views of the city from many of the higher mesa tops.

AREA 93: SOUTHWEST HEIGHTS (Coors West to Laguna Reservation and Rio Bravo South to Isleta Reservation) - This area is a mixture of older homes and many new developments. There are good views of the city from many of the higher mesa tops.

AREA 100: NORTH VALLEY (I25 to Rio Grande River and Montgomery to Alemeda) - Tall trees and green pastures with the Rio Grande River running through it characterize the north valley. It has mature landscaping and a rural atmosphere. Horses are allowed in many areas. Home styles range from bungalows to top end customs.

AREA 101: NEAR NORTH VALLEY (I25 to Rio Grande River and I40 to Montgomery) - Tall trees and green pastures with the Rio Grande River running through it characterize the north valley. It has mature landscaping and a rural atmosphere. Horses are allowed in many areas. Home styles range from bungalows to top end customs.

AREA 102: : FAR NORTH VALLEY (I25 to Rio Grande River and Alemeda to Sandoval County Line) - Tall trees and green pastures with the Rio Grande River running through it characterize the north valley. AREA 103: WEST RIVER VALLEY (Coors to Rio Grande River and Montano to Alemeda) - There are many new developments and custom homes in this area. This area offers fine views of the city and the Rio Grande river

AREAS 110-112: NORTHWEST HEIGHTS (West of Rio Grande River and North of Central) - A rapidly growing area. Views of the city and mountains can be spectacular from some neighborhoods. The Ladera Golf Course is great for the golfer's enjoyment. The City's newest Mall, Cottonwood Mall, is located in this area.

AREAS 120-121: PARADISE HILLS (West of Coors Blvd and North of Paseo Del Norte Blvd) - This section of the west mesa boasts good city and mountain views. Paradise Hills Country Club and Golf Course is located in this area. There are both older homes and many new developments in this area. There is easy access to the Northeast Heights and I-25 via the 6 lane Paseo Del Norte Bridge. Cottonwood Mall is just minutes from Paradise Hills.

AREA 130: CORRALES (A Village Stradling Bernalillo and Sandoval County) - Once an old Spanish farming town, the Village of Corrales is an area with fruit trees, cottonwood trees, horses and a slower pace of life. Older adobe homes can be found here as well as exciting contemporary homes. One half to one acre lots are predominant, however some mini-farms are available. Some areas have excellent mountain views.

AREAS 140-162: RIO RANCHO (A City Located Just North of the Bernalillo County Line) - This is a rapidly growing city on the west side of the Rio Grande in Sandoval County. It is characterized by affordable housing and wonderful views of the mountains and Albuquerque. It has its own shopping, country club, golf course and school system. The Cottonwood Mall is within 10 minutes of the heart of Rio Rancho.

AREA 170: BERNALILLO / ALGODONES (2 Smaller Communities Located North of Albuquerque) - Smaller communities located north of Albuquerque. Rural, country atmosphere with unpaved side roads, orchards, pasture land, and gardens. Easy access to Albuquerque via I-25 and approximately 30-45 minutes to Santa Fe.

AREA 180: PLACITAS (A Community Located North of Albuquerque and East of I-25) - Rolling terrain, natural high desert vegetation, dramatic cliffs and rock croppings characterize Placitas. You will find older Adobe homes as well as a myriad of contemporary homes. Lots are larger and views are gorgeous. Placitas is approximately a 25 minute drive to Albuquerque and 40-45 minute drive to Santa Fe.

AREAS 210-270: EAST MOUNTAINS AND EDGEWOOD (Communities on the East Side of the Sandia Mountains) - Tall pines, beautiful panoramic views and green hills describe most of the mountain regions. The temperature is usually five to fifteen degrees cooler than in Albuquerque. Snow and rainfall are more abundant. Edgewood is flatter and is located at the edge of the plains just east of the mountains. Commute time to Albuquerque is typically 20-30 minutes.
